Transition
The education and transition system can be a minefield, whatever age your child or young person is - from early years right through to adulthood. Please view the sub-pages in this section for more specific information including SEN Support, EHC Plans, transition, transport, Information Service (IASS) and mediation. |

To support parents and young people in understanding the special educational support available, every educational setting is required to publish an SEN Information Report on their school website that sets out how they support pupils with SEN. This should be accompanied by an SEN policy. As each setting will have their own approach to supporting pupils with special educational needs, parents and young people are advised to read the SEN information report. Parents and young people may also wish contact the school directly to ask any questions and/or arrange a visit.
For children and young people already attending an educational setting the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) will be able to provide information about a child/young person’s needs, the outcomes they are working towards and support in place to aide them in meeting their outcomes.
If a child or young person has an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan the SEN statutory assessment team can provide information and advice about the various educational settings in Bexley. The statutory assessment team should also be contacted if requesting a special educational needs assessment.
School places for children with EHC plans are allocated through the Statutory Assessment Panel.
School places for children who do not have an EHC plan are allocated through the school admissions team. Please note that in common with many other boroughs our schools are often full and available spaces are limited.

ASK LISTEN DO
Making conversations with schools count! This leaflet, funded by the Department for Education and developed by families, is intended to help build a mutually respectful partnership between families and the school, college or other education
settings. On occasion, relationships between families and schools are not as successful as they need to be. By building trust this can change and a new way of working together can be developed. This can be better for everyone, especially the children and young people. Effective partnerships can help to reduce misunderstandings, disagreements and complaints. In this leaflet, as part of NHS England’s Ask Listen Do project and in partnership with the Whole School SEND consortium, we have identified a range of questions, that families may want to ask those who support their children at school. This is intended to enable families to ask effective questions in order to find out more about what the school is doing, how it is evaluated and what impact it has on their child’s learning and wellbeing. By supporting families and schools to work together, the aim is to reduce conflict and improve outcomes for children. |

School Exclusions - Helpful guide from IPSEA
School exclusions: What is legal? Pupils can experience school exclusion in many different ways and the language used to describe exclusions can itself be confusing. In this context, it can be difficult to notice where exclusions are used in a way that is not consistent with the law. We believe that schools, parents, carers and pupils will all benefit from clear information about their legal powers and rights. This factsheet defines the different terms that are used to describe exclusions and what their legal basis is. To download your copy - click on the picture on the right: |
Exam Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments
Access Arrangements allow students with special educational needs or disabilities to access exams without changing the demands of the assessment. They are based on evidence of need, the normal way of working in the classroom and must be appropriate to the student and the exam. If you think that your child or young person will need extra help to enable them to successfully take exams - such as extra time, coloured paper, rest breaks, a computer or an individual room - you should talk to the SENCO and/or Examinations Officer at school to confirm that any individual requirements have been requested early, as some arrangements can be made through the school, but others may require prior permission from the awarding body.
For more information on access arrangements - please download our parent information sheet below:
