On 21/22 of March, Bexley Voice invited the Kent Independent Advice and Support Service (IASS) to run a workshop for parent/carers who have a child or young person (age 0-25) on how to participate confidently with professionals. Our thanks go to Kerry and Emma from IASS who ran this well planned and informative course. Also to the parents who gave precious time to attend and the BV volunteers for organising and funding this course.
The group of parents realised how important it is that parents are actively involved with decision making for their child and the planning of services for them.
They also spent the 2 days learning: ¨ What is meant by ‘Participation’ and the specific activities that this might involve. ¨ How to identify the barriers that might make taking part difficult. ¨ Communication skills to increase confidence when expressing your views. ¨ Strategies for coping with difficult situations.
Feedback from the course was very positive:
I feel able to express a different view positively.
I enjoyed the active listening, building relationships and body language tasks.
I will use the skills i have learnt to prepare for meetings effectively.
I feel so much more confident to give my views.
The course strengthened our knowledge and skills to be able to confidently contribute and participate.
